NEWCASTLE trainer Paul Perry and Goondiwindi's Mick Hicks have not wasted time spending some of the big money they have just earned.
Perry again showed why he is considered as one of Australia's top trainers when he prepared Choisir to win the group 1 $400,000 Lightning Stakes at his first run from a spell last Sunday.
Perry celebrated by heading straight to the yearling sales staged in Melbourne on Monday and Tuesday, and he came away with another strong batch of yearlings.
Perry has had great success in buying at the Melbourne sales in previous years.
And Hicks, who received the best part of $1 million by selling a 49 per cent share in his two-year-old Murphy's Blu Boy, was also very active at the Melbourne sales.
Hicks spent more than $150,000 buying five colts and a filly, including two yearlings by Dolphin Street, one by Dangerous, one by Lion Cavern and two youngsters by Umatilla.
Perry spent in excess of $250,000 to buy three colts.
One of his purchases is a colt by Danehill Dancer, which is the sire of Choisir.
He also bought colts by the ill-fated Snippets and Gilded Time.
One of the interesting sidelines to the Melbourne sales was that Gai Waterhouse purchased just one lot out of more than 430 on offer. She paid $42,000 for a Red Ransom filly. * Jockey Craig Agnew was on hand for a benefit night last Saturday, but was still keen to head to Wyong for his only ride on Sunday.
He had just set foot on the track when told that his mount was a late scratching, so he headed straight back to the car and made the trip back to Sydney.
